B. Sc. Economics

Do you enjoy studying Mathematics and humanities? Do you want to develop an analytically while having a good knowledge of current affairs and other societal issues? If yes, then Economics is the ideal degree for you. The study of Economics prepares you for not only careers in the finance-related field but a wide range of careers. This subject is not just about money, Economics is a social science,  that seeks to discover how nations produce, use and distribute resources. You will also be taught a lot about other subjects such as marketing, politics, even statistics. 

Your studies in Economics which teach you how to pose critical arguments as well as how to make intelligent statistical analysis and written arguments. In your first year, you would be given a broad introduction to what the subject is all about. As you progress with your studies, you would be taught more specialized topics, with a wide range of electives to choose from.

In the first year, you would learn about microeconomics, a focus on individuals or businesses within an economy, and then you will progress to macroeconomics – the study of entire industries or economies on a national and international scale

Economics usually benefits massively from possessing good mathematical and statistical skills, these are skills every good economist would need. Some of the topics you may encounter while studying economics include marketing,  business law and ethics, poverty and inequality, behavioural economics, international trade, international relations, money, banking and finance, industrial or labour economics,  environmental economics, business law and ethics

You would be taught through various methods which include attending classes and taking notes, small group discussions, seminars, tutorials and small group discussions. An economics degree will provide you with many skills that are highly needed by employers. This includes critical reasoning skills, ability to critically analyze data, time management, use of initiative to solve problems, ability to work in teams, presentation skills, research skills and cultural awareness. The degree equips you with transferrable skills that can be useful in almost every job.

A degree in economics is important for people who want to become professional economists. Economics degrees can also be useful for careers such as insurance, accountancy, tax and banking.   

The minimum entry requirement for admission into the Economics program at Southwestern University are:

Credit level passes in 5 relevant subjects at (SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB) O’ Level result or its equivalent, obtained at not more than two sittings and with JAMB/JUPEP/IJMB/OND/HND, Advance Level result.

UTME REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must sit for the current JAMB UTME exams and attain the National cut off mark as a statutory requirement for entry into a Nigerian University.
