Mass Communication

Communication is unavoidable in all human interactions. Our interactions with close friends and family, business partners and the rest of the world all require communication of ideas. Mass communication refers to any communication that is done through the mass media. There are innumerable reasons to study Mass Communication. First, this course would teach you a lot of competencies that are required for the corporate world. This includes the ability to think critically, analyze problems and solve them, and of course writing and public speaking skills.

This subject would also sharpen your understanding of the world and get you ready to face complicated global challenges. It is more than just journalism. There are a couple of specialties in Mass Communication, such as Public Relations, Advertising, Print media, Journalism and marketing.

Due to the advent of the internet and mobile platforms, anyone who wants to can use the mass media. Based on this, it takes a lot of training and intelligence, to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Career options for a graduate of Mass Communication exist in almost every industry. Graduates can work as Research analyst, Content Marketing Specialist, Media Consultant, Information specialist, Information Analyst, media specialist, writer, editor, reporter, journalist, media critic, news director, proofreader, columnist, Videographer, Biographer, mediator,  publisher, marketing communications specialist, graphics designer among others.

The above is not comprehensive and some of the professions listed here may also require supplementary professional training beyond what is offered in the Mass Communication degree.   

The minimum entry requirement for admission into the Mass Communication program at Southwestern University are:

Credit level passes in 5 relevant subjects at (SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB) O’ Level result or its equivalent, obtained at not more than two sittings and with JAMB/JUPEP/IJMB/OND/HND, Advance Level result.

UTME REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must sit for the current JAMB UTME exams and attain the National cut off mark as a statutory requirement for entry into a Nigerian University.
